San Francisco International Airport, also well-known as SFO, is an international airport, situated on the south of downtown San Francisco, California, which is neighbouring Mill-brae and San Bruno in unincorporated San Mateo County.
In 1927, the airport held a committed and devoted ceremony for Mills Field Municipal Airport. The land was rented out from Ogden L. Mills who had also leased it from his grandfather Darius O. Mills. Previously, the airport was named as Mills Field Municipal Airport until the year 1931 when it became San Francisco Municipal Airport in 1955. The airport has flights throughout North America. It is the major gateway to Europe and Asia.
In San Francisco Bay Area including all of Northern California, SFO is considered to be the largest airport and the second busiest airport in California, next to Los Angeles International Airport. In 2014, the SFO was ranked as the seventh busiest airport in the United States and the twenty-first busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger count. The San Francisco International Airport is the fifth largest hub for United Airlines and it functions as United Airlines’ primary transpacific gateway. The airport also serves as Virgin America’s principal base of operations. It is the lone maintenance hub of United Airlines and houses the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum and Library.
San Francisco International Airport is owned and manned by the City and County of San Francisco. However, it is in San Mateo County. From 1999 to 2004, the San Francisco Airport Commission operated city-owned SFO Enterprises, Inc., to oversee its business purchases and operations of ventures.
The airport consists of four terminals (1, 2, 3, and International) and seven concourses (Boarding Areas A through G), which were arranged alphabetically in a counterclockwise ring.
A Fly Quiet Program was mandated and implemented by San Francisco International Airport. SFO was one of the first airports to implement such program. The program was designed to grade airlines according to their performance on noise abatement procedures while flying in and out of the airport. The Aircraft Noise Abatement Office started the Jon C. Long Fly Quiet Program to encourage airlines to operate as quietly as possible at SFO.
