Waikiki is the main beach destination of most people heading to Honolulu and the island of Oahu. This area is known for its huge crescent shaped beach, where tourists come to lie out in the sun, swim, and surf. Stores, restaurants, and hotels line the oceanfront street backing Waikiki Beach.
Waikiki has a reputation for being the world’s most renowned ideal beach resort, deified with South Sea magic. This small, flat area of Honolulu is where many locals and tourists spend their holidays. Waikiki is the heart of Honolulu and the whole Hawaiian Islands. The state’s largest choice of hotels is located in this small area. They can be found either on the beach, on Kalakaua Avenue, which runs parallel to the beach, or on the side streets.
Kalakaua Avenue is the main street through Waikiki. On the beginning part of Kalakaua, lies theimpressive Hawaii Convention Center. On the middle part of Kalakaua, are several hotels and brand-name luxury stores. The sidewalks are relatively wide and crowded by Hawaiian standards. Lately, huge parts of Kalakaua have been renovated to appear more modern.
On the southeast edge of Waikiki, at 2777 Kalakaua Avenue, is the Waikiki Aquarium. This aquarium housesvarious tropical fishes, sea cucumbers, seals, and marine life found in Hawaii and the Pacific that will surely provide the visitors with an entertaining and educational experience for at least an hour.
What is today known as Waikiki was originally marshland, thrived with fresh water springs, rivers and more. Wai means fresh water, and kiki means spring thus it was nicknamed Spouting Fresh Water. In 1794, Kamehameha I arrived at Waikiki Beach from Big Island with a fleet of canoes, ready to claim rule over Oahu, the following became the famous Battle of Nuuanu Pali. In the 19th century, Waikiki is the vacation retreat for Hawaiian royalty. In 1901, the first hotel in Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider Hotel, opened. Tourism business started going into this wetland district of Oahu, but in 1928 that changed with the construction of the Ala Wai Canal, which drained all the fresh water from Waikiki. Sand from California and other locations were imported to Waikiki to create what soon became one of the world’s most visited beaches.
The primary attraction of Waikikiis the sand strip along the ocean front. Waikiki has a series of shorelines, almost all ideal for swimming and other types of water sports. The shorelines begin in the west with Kahanamoku Beach, which was named after the famous Olympic swimmer, directly in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and extend to Sans Souci Beach at Diamond Head in the east. They overlap one another so smoothly that tourists find themidentical. Kahanamoku Beach is separated from Gray’s Beach by a narrow channel. This is followed by the Royal Hawaiian Beach, without a doubt the most famous and crowded part of Waikiki. Next Kuhio Beach Park, with the stone, built Kapahulu Wall in front of a portion of it. This is the only part of the beach unsuitable for swimming. Beyond this is Kapiolani Beach Park and Sans Souci Beach.
Further beaches, located outside of Waikiki proper, include the small Kaluahole Beach, Diamond Head Beach Park, Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park, made somewhat dangerous because of high waves, Kaalawai, Kahala Beach, where the Kahala Hilton Hotel is located, and Wailupe Beach Park on the western side of the artificial peninsula of the same name.
