Chicago O’Hare International Airport, similarly known in different names as O’Hare Airport, Chicago International Airport, Chicago O’Hare, or simply O’Hare, is an international airport, situated on the Far Northwest Side of Chicago, Illinois, 17 miles or 27 kilometers northwest of the Loop.   1. One of the first interesting facts about O’Hare Airport is that it takes about 15 million passengers in a year. This makes it the second largest passenger carrying hub for United Airlines following George Bush Intercontinental Airport. 
  2. O’Hare Airport was built in February of 1944. 
  3. Chicago City Council renamed the airport formerly known as Orchard Field to Chicago O’Hare International Airport in 1949. O’Hare Aiport was named after Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare. He was a revered WWII fighter pilot. On top of O’Hare airport being named after him, he also was awarded a Medal of Honor for his service. 
  4. Many wonder how big is O’Hare Airport. The airport spans over 30 km² and covers 7,200 acres.   
  5. Because of how big O’Hare Airport is, it has four passenger terminals with nine concourses with a total of 182 gates. It has very sophisticated facilities that include an underground pedestrian walkway connecting the two concourses, brightened by a neon light show. Likewise, it was the busiest airport in the world in terms of the number of passengers until 1998. 
  11. O’Hare has been chosen as the “Best Airport in North America” for ten years by two different sources namely Readers of the U.S. Edition of Business Traveller Magazine from 1998 to 2003 and Global Traveler Magazine from 2004 to 2007.
