The professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is named the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers play in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North Division. The Steelers, established in 1993, are the first franchise in the AFC.
On July 8, 1933, the Steelers were created as the Pittsburgh Pirates by Art Rooney,acquiring its original name from the baseball team of the same name. It was a usual practice for NFL teams at that time. To make a distinction between the baseball team, local media called the football team the Rooneymen, an informal nickname which continued for decades after the team took on its present nickname. The Rooney family took the ownership of the Steelers since its establishment. The present owner is Dan Rooney, Art’s son, who has given much control of the franchise to his son Art Rooney II.
The Steeler Nation is the nickname of a large, widespread fan base that the Steelers enjoy, being one of NFL’s flagship teams. The Steelers presently play their home games at Heinz Field on Pittsburgh’s North Side in the North Shore neighbourhood, which also accommodates the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. Constructed in 2001, the stadium substituted Three Rivers Stadium, which accommodated the Steelers for 31 seasons. The Steelers had played their games in Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field prior to Three Rivers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles have a major rivalry since 1933 through 1966 as both teams were part of the same division. In 1967, they were placed in different divisions but remained in the same conference for three years. In 1970, finally, the Steelers, together with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts, went to the American Football Conference while the Eagles remained with the rest of the old NFL teams in the National Football Conference. Because of this, the Steelers and Eagles no longer competed with each otherevery year. They are presently arranged to meet once every four years in the regular season, with the next meeting in Philadelphia, where the Steelers have lost eight straight games wayback 1966.
