As more Americans receive Covid vaccinations, the idea of traveling seems to be on everyone’s minds. Just the thought of basking on a tropical beach or exploring a new destination is enough to send everyone packing their suitcases.

But as tempting as it is to book your next vacation right away, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Covid vaccine and travel. Some are wondering, can I travel after the Covid vaccine? And others are asking, if so, where can I go?

While guidelines and recommendations change nearly every day, we have rounded up the most up-to-date answers to your frequently asked questions regarding the Covid vaccine and travel. Follow along to find out what you can and cannot do after receiving your Covid vaccination.

When Am I Considered Fully Vaccinated from Covid?

Before we dive into where you can go and what you can do, let us first discuss Covid vaccines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you are generally considered fully vaccinated from Covid two weeks after receiving your second dose in the two-part series of Moderna or Pfizer or two weeks after your single dose of the Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

Once you are fully vaccinated, experts recommend keeping your vaccination card on you or carrying a copy at all times to show proof of inoculation.

Can I Travel After the Covid Vaccine?

Yes, the CDC says that you can travel and fly once you are fully vaccinated.

Those who are vaccinated and want to travel domestically within the United States are no longer required to get tested or self-quarantine before and after traveling. With that said, if you have been exposed to someone with the virus or you are experiencing Covid-related symptoms, contact your doctor and take a test or self-quarantine to prevent the spread of the disease.

As for those who want to travel internationally, you will need to look at the individual country or territory’s guidelines and recommendations before traveling. Some destinations may require negative tests or self-quarantines, while others may request proof of vaccination.

If you are returning to the U.S. from abroad, you must provide a negative Covid test prior to boarding your flight back to the states. You will not need to quarantine upon your return, but it is still recommended that you take a Covid test three to five days after your international travels.

Where Can I Travel After the Covid Vaccine?

For starters, fully vaccinated people are welcome to travel domestically within the United States. However, we do stress looking into each state’s guidelines before making your travel reservations. For example, Hawaii requires a 10-day quarantine for all visitors, unless they provide proof of a negative Covid test prior to arriving on the island.

Interested in traveling outside of the United States? In terms of traveling to the European Union, currently, there are either bans or very strict regulations regarding Americans entering European countries. However, on April 25, 2021, the head of the European Commission announced that they hope to lift many of these restrictions in the near future, but no exact date or details were provided.

With that said, there are several European countries and territories that are welcoming vaccinated Americans, including Greece, Iceland, Croatia, and Cyprus. A couple of other countries have also recently opened up their borders to vaccinated American travelers, such as Georgia, Montenegro, and Serbia.

For those looking for a more tropical vacation, destinations like the Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, the Dominican Republic, French Polynesia, and the Bahamas are now welcoming travelers from abroad. You can also fly to coastal destinations in Mexico, such as Cancun, but the U.S.-Mexican border remains closed to those entering Mexico in a vehicle or on foot.

Prefer to travel to an Asian territory or country? Currently, only a handful of countries are open for tourism, such as the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal. You will also come across several Central and South American countries that are welcoming tourists like Ecuador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

As mentioned above, these destinations may have opened their borders to travelers, but some may still have rules you are required to follow, such as showing your vaccination card, providing a negative test, or quarantining after arriving.

As more people become vaccinated and the number of Covid cases decreases, more countries and territories are likely to open up to vaccinated American travelers. More and more destinations are opening their borders each day, so keep an eye on the news.

Do I Still Have to Wear a Mask and Socially Distance While Traveling?

Yes. Even if you are fully vaccinated, the CDC recommends wearing a mask, maintaining six feet of distance from others when possible, avoiding crowds, and continuing to wash your hands regularly. In fact, many planes, trains, and buses, along with indoor attractions, will require you to wear a mask regardless of your vaccination status.
