In 1973, Denmark (Including Greenland, later on, left the Community in 1985), Ireland and the United Kingdom entered the community. Norway agreed to join however the citizens of Norway rejects to join membership in an election. Democratic elections to the European Parliament were held in 1979. This was the first direct democratic elections.
Maastricht Treaty (1992-present)
The Maastricht Treaty was formally established by the European Union. The main architects were Helmut Kohl, and Francois Mitterrand came into strength on November 1, 1993. Austria, Finland Sweden joined the European Union in 1995.
There are 28 independent states that include the European Union. In alphabetical order, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.
