Requirements for Flying During Covid-19 Pandemic

February 23, 2021

Jordan Brown

The entire world has been grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic for nearly a year now, and there are still a lot of questions regarding what is safe and what is not safe to do, especially when it comes to traveling.

If you are wondering how to fly safely during Covid, check out our guide below. We outline some of the flying requirements you should take into account before booking a private flight at this time. Keep in mind, private charter companies ask travelers to adhere to these requirements to help maintain the safest environment possible for everyone.

We also review additional recommendations to consider before doing any kind of traveling, whether you decide to fly private or commercial. Follow along to ensure you are properly prepared to fly during Covid.

Health Documentation

Private jet charter companies require all passengers to present a Covid-19 Health Documentation Form unless the lead traveler is representing a household or family unit. This form acknowledges that you have not tested positive, felt symptoms, or been exposed to someone with the virus within the past 14 days. By signing the document, you also agree to the private airline’s flying requirements, which include passing a temperature check and wearing a mask during the flight.

Temperature Checks

If you are traveling on a private jet charter, all passengers are subjected to flying requirements, including a touch-less infrared temperature check prior to boarding. According to the CDC guidelines, if your temperature exceeds 100.4 degrees F, you will not be able to board your aircraft.

However, if you are experiencing a non-communicable illness, particularly one that would raise your temperature, you must present the airline with a doctor’s note, explaining your condition, 24 hours in advance of your scheduled departure. Without a note, you will not be allowed to board your flight.

Mandatory Masks

Masks are another flying requirement during the Covid pandemic. All passengers onboard a private jet are required to wear a mask at all times. If you are unwilling to comply, the flight crew will deny you entry onto the aircraft.

Additional Private Jet Safety Measures

Any private jet charter you fly with during the Covid pandemic will encourage social distancing whenever possible. Of course, you cannot always maintain a six feet distance from others during the flight, but keep this in mind when it is feasible, such as when boarding or exiting the aircraft. You will also be asked to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer to help minimize the spread of any germs.

Pre-Travel Considerations for Private and Commercial Travel

Flying during Covid means taking extra safety precautions. If you qualify for a Covid vaccine, experts recommend getting both doses before making your travel arrangements.

If you cannot get vaccinated, continue following CDC guidelines prior to your travels. This includes maintaining six feet of distance between people outside of your household, wearing a mask in public places, washing your hands, and avoiding touching your nose, mouth, and eyes. Do not attend any large gatherings before your flight, and above all, do not travel if you feel unwell or have been exposed to someone with the virus.

Travel Restrictions

Regardless of whether you plan to fly commercial or private, look into city and state travel restrictions to ensure you are following proper protocol as they can vary from one region to the next. Some areas may have specific testing or quarantine requirements that you must follow before or after traveling.

For example, if you travel outside of New York for more than 24 hours, you must obtain a negative Covid test within three days of arriving back in the state and then quarantine for three days. On the fourth day of your quarantine, you will need to pass another Covid test. If your results are negative, you can exit quarantine.

Regardless of the individual city and state guidelines, the CDC recommends getting a Covid test three to five days after traveling or quarantining and avoiding others for at least ten days post-travel.

Covid Testing

There is a good chance you are wondering, “Do I need a Covid test before I fly?” The answer depends on where you are traveling. Currently, all passengers flying into the United States must present a negative Covid test or documentation of recovery before boarding.

Regardless of whether it is a requirement based on your travel plans, experts recommend getting a viral Covid test one to three days before traveling to help ensure you are not infected. Keep your negative test results on hand in case you are asked for them during your travels. If you test positive, do not travel.

So, is it safe to fly with Coronavirus? No, under no circumstances is it safe to travel if you are infected with the virus. Covid is extremely contagious, and you will not only put others at risk during your flight, but you could further spread the virus to the destination where you are traveling.

Should I Fly Private During Covid?

Many passengers who are concerned about how to fly safely during Covid are turning to charter plane service instead of commercial airlines. When you fly privately, you can choose your preferred aircraft and jet amenities, but you can also decide who you want to fly with. This lets you avoid traveling with strangers outside of your household unit.

You may also feel an increased sense of safety when flying private because you can bypass going through security checkpoints, sitting in crowded airport lounges, and sharing a plane with hundreds of other passengers. You ultimately interact with and come into contact with fewer passengers and staff, which can lower your exposure to the virus.
