If you think you’re ready for the challenge, charter a jet to Cabo San Lucas for the weekend in time for the Ironman Los Cabos competition on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Baja California. Or, just go to enjoy all the action.

Added to the Ironman circuit in 2013, the Los Cabos event will feature  a 2.4-mile swim in the beautiful waters of the Sea of Cortez, a 112-mile bike course, and a 26.2-mile run along the corridor that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.  There will be at least 1,500 participants from more than 50 countries, and the views will be spectacular!

The event will offer 50 qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship, the world’s most prestigious triathlon, which is scheduled for October in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Airports: There are two airports near Los Cabos – Los Cabos International Airport (MMSD), the busiest airport in the area, and Cabo San Lucas International Airport (MMSL), which is 4.5 miles northwest of Cabo San Lucas and serves general aviation traffic.

Where to Stay:  Cabo is a very popular tourist and celebrity destination and offers many high-quality, luxurious resorts where you can revive yourself after the Ironman competition. Some of the favorites are:

  • Capella Pedregal – Whale-watch from your room (they provide the binoculars) at this exceptional resort. You access the hotel through a tunnel, but it’s very close to town and the marina. Every room here has a fireplace and private plunge pool, and the onsite restaurants are all top-notch. You’ll want to move in.
  • Las Ventanas  – Book a rooftop terrace suite and access the rooftop and breathtaking views via your own private stairway.
  • Villa La Estancia – One nice feature of this property is its location on a good swimming beach (Medano). The rooms are large and all of them have big balconies. Ask for a room with a view of Lands End. There’s a golf course nearby and you’re just a short drive from downtown Cabo San Lucas.
  • Cabo Azul Resort – This laid-back but elegant resort is a bit removed from  either Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, but you may appreciate the quieter atmosphere, the private beach, three infinity pools and excellent spa.

What to Do: Play a round at Cabo del Sol Golf Club or Diamante Golf Course; head out to El Arco (the landmark natural rock formation that’s shaped like an arch) to look for pelicans and sea lions; soak up some sun at Playa del Amor (Lover’s Beach) or Divorce Beach; or, if you still need more exercise,  grab your surfboard and head for Zippers, at Mile 17 on the Cabo Corridor. And don’t forget Cabo’s vibrant nightlife, even if you’re only there to people watch.

Ironman: Check out this page for registration information and details about the race.
