McClellan-Palomar Airport, known locally as Palomar Airport, is a general aviation, corporate and commercial airport located in Carlsbad, California. It began construction in 1957 to replace Del Mar Airport, and opened for daytime operations in 1959. McClellan-Palomar airport was named for Gerald McClellan, an aviator and community leader in San Diego’s North County. The airport has expanded over the decades and, in 1996, the FAA issued certification for the airport to handle aircraft that carry more than 30 passengers. A new $24 million, 18,000 square foot terminal was opened on January 29, 2009.
