Southwest Airlines Co. is a major U. S. airline and the world’s largest low-cost carrier headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The airline was established in 1967 by Herb Kelleher and adoptive its current name (Southwest Airlines) in 1971. The airline has nearly 46,000 employees as of December 2014 and operates more than 3,800 flights per day.

Southwest Airlines began with the March 16, 1967, incorporation of Air Southwest Co. by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher to fly within the State of Texas.   Kelleher believed that staying at Texas; the airline could avoid federal regulation. It has been a major inspiration to other low-cost carriers, and its business model has been repeated many times around the world.

There was a time when most of the major airlines filed bankruptcy. There were several reasons, but the biggest reason was not the recession at the end of 2010 not even the Sept. 11, 2001terrorist hijackings.  It was the rising cost of fuel, which has drained literally billions of dollars away from the airline’s bottom lines.   Rising fuel expenses have not only cut airline’s profit margin, but it is also blamed for the slash in labor for the airlines as well.

Customers drink beers while watching Southwest planes touch down at Love Field and hold up signs rating the pilot’s performance from 1 to 10.   Keheller himself is even known to appear from time to time, a tumbler of Wild Turkey in hand.   The colour-full co-founder’s presence is a reminder of his airline’s glorious past.   But under Kelly’s leadership, it is attempting a daring change in course. It is up to Kelly to deliver a 10 of his own – a smooth landing proving that Southwest is not merely middling, but still the best can also change a ticket at no extra charge or, if they cancel a flight, get full credit for another trip.   Most of all, Southwest wins loyal fans with its praised loyal service.
