Facts about Piaggio P180 Avanti

The Piaggio P180 Avanti is an Italian executive transport aircraft with twin turboprop engines seated in apusher configuration. It can cater up to nine passengers in a pressurized cabin and can be operated by one or two pilots. The design is of three-surface configuration, with a small forward wing and a conventional tailplane as well as its major wing, with the wing spars passing outside of the passenger cabin area.

In 1979, its design studies began. In 1980 and 1981, the designs were tested in wind tunnels in Italy and the United States of America. In 1983, coordination with Learjet to establish and develop the aircraft began; however, it ended on 13 January 1986, with Piaggio continuing the development on its own. On September 23, 1986, the first prototype flew. On October 2, 1990, the American and Italian certification was attained and secured. Learjet’s domination and impact can be obviously seen in the two delta fins, which seated on the last portion of the tail, as it is found on most Learjets. The main reason these devices were designed is to help and provide yaw stability and pitch stability at any attack from high angles.

The Piaggio P180 Avanti was advertised and marketed faster compared to other turboprops and many mid-sized jets. It is also up to 40% more fuel efficient compared to other market-competing jets.

The Piaggio P180 Avanti was the first production variant of the Piaggio Aerospace.

The Piaggio P180 Avanti’s turboprop engines werepositioned and placed on a mid-set, high aspect ratio wing, which is locatedbehind the cabin area. The three-surface design merged with both a T-tail and a pair of small, with fixed forewings having slight anhedral and landing flaps.

Compared to other conventional turboprop aircraft, the interior noise of the aircraft is lower due to the fact that the propellers and engine exhausts are located behind the cabin. Piaggio quotes 68 dBA. However, due to the strongly disrupted flow in which the pusher propellers operate, the noise is higher on the exterior. The exterior noise level and its higher pitched sound has been exposed and presented to be the result primarily of the interaction of the turbine engine exhaust flows and the five-bladed pusher propellers.
