The Cincinnati Bengals is a professional American football franchise that is based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Cincinnati Bengals were founded way back in 1966 as one of the members of the American Football League (AFL). The team is still a member of the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Paul Brown Stadium located in downtown Cincinnati is their home stadium. The Pittsburgh Steelers, The Cleveland Browns, and the Baltimore Ravens are considered to be their chief rivals.

Paul Brown, former Cleveland Browns head coach, founded Bengals as a member of American Football League (AFL).

In 1967, American Football League granted a franchise under the ownership group led by Paul Brown. Brown named the team Bengals to give it a link with the past professional football in Cincinnati.

For 49 years of existence, to be exact, the Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC championship in 1981 and 1988. The Bengals reached the Super Bowl twice sometime in 1980 but lost Super Bowls XVI AND XXIII to the San Francisco 49ers. Mike Brown, Paul Brown’s son, inherited the interest in controlling the team. Austin Knowlton, an estate co-founder is now the majority owner of the Bengals franchise due to the fact that Mike Brown purchased some shares of the team owned by Austin Knowlton sometime in 2011.

The period of great struggle was in the year of 1990’s and the 2000’s. The team’s de facto general manager, Mike Brown, was named as the worst team owners in American Professional Sport.

The team has been doing good and on the right track and direction since the 2009 season under the leadership of head coach Marvin Lewis, which is considered as the second-longest tenured head coach in NFL, behind the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick. Marvin Lewis was also awarded as the NFL Coach of the Year. The team was able to recover and return to playoffs again in the year 2009. In the year 2010, the Bengals posted a 4-12 record.

For the third straight year, for the 2013 season, the Bengals won the AFC North finishing with an 11-5 record, but sad to know, during the wild card round, the Bengals was defeated this time by the San Diego Chargers, holding a record of 27-10.

The 2014 season started very well with the Bengals. They won their first three encounters against Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcon and lastly, the Tennessee Titans but wasn’t able to defeat the New England Patriots during their week 5 match up with the record of 43-17.  As of 2014 season in Super Bowl, the Bengals are one of the 13 NFL teams to not have won.
