The Chicago Bears is a professional football team playing in the North Division of the NFC (National Football League) of the NFL and was founded and coached by George Halas. He coached the team in 4 different 10-year stints. His first season was the NFL’s first season of 1920, and his last season coaching the team was 1967. The team was established in 1919; 97 years ago and headquartered in Halas Hall, Lake Forest, Illinois. It was originally named as Decatur Staleys’ in the first season of play in 1920. The Decatur Staleys, after moving to Chicago, became the Chicago Staleys in 1921. They then became the Chicago Bears in 1922. The team had won nine NFL Championships and one Super Bowl.
It was in the year 1950 when the team’s first logo a black bear on top of a football was introduced and kept it until 1962. The same year as the Bears trademark ‘C’ logo was first introduced.
In the year 1974, the team decided to keep the same ‘C’ logo, but they changed the color from white to orange with white trim. This is the current logo; however, since the club has introduced alternate logos, including a black bear inside of the orange wishbone ‘C’, introduced in 1995, and an orange bear head, introduced in 1999.
The team chose navy blue and orange as their colors because of George Halas’ alma mater, the University of Illinois which he adopted similar colors for the team. Their official team colors are Dark Navy Blue, Orange, White. Their Fight song is entitled “Bear Down, Chicago Bears”. Their Mascot’s name is Staley Da Bear.
The current home of the Bears is the Soldier Field, located on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. They played there from 1974-2001 and then 2003-present (Soldier Field was being made new in 2002). They moved to Soldier Field in 1971 after outgrowing Wrigley Field, the team’s home for 50 years. The Bears had played at Wrigley Field from 1921-1970. Wrigley Field is the home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, and the Bears were named after the Cubs. A 73-0 victory over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL Championship game was the most lopsided win.
The Bears defeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-28 at Soldier Field on September 8th, 1985 in the first game of the season. The Bears lost in Miami Dolphins 38-24 on Monday Night Football, December 2nd, 1985, the only team who beat the Bears. It was Kevin Butler who was the first to score more than 1000 points in his career. The Green Bay Packers and the Bears are the oldest rivals in the NFL. The Bears were selected to play in the first American Bowl, the first NFL overseas game in history in 1986 and beat Dallas Cowboys.
