Brief History of the Salem Witch Trials

A series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts is known as the Salem witch trials. This happened from February 1692 to May 1693. The trials ended in the executions and killing of twenty people, fourteen of them were women. Fifteen of them were executed by hanging. The remaining five people along with two infant/children died while in prison.

In 17th century, twelve other women had already been executed in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Even though being commonly recognized as the Salem Witch Trials, the preliminary hearings in the year 1692 were attended and controlled in several towns, the Salem Village (now Danvers), the Salem Town, the Ipswich, and the And over. It was in 1692 that the most heinous trials were conducted by the Court of oyer and Terminer in Salem Town.

The episode is one of the most notorious cases of mass hysteria in Colonial American. It has been passed down in political oratory and popular literature as a dramatic cautionary tale about the probability and the risk of isolationism, religious extremism, false accusations, and lapses in due process.

In 1992, the 300th anniversary event, the victims of the trials were observed; a park was dedicated in Salem and a memorial in Danvers. The Massachusetts legislature passed an act on discharging and acquitting all of those convicted and listing them by name, which includes some persons left out of earlier actions sometime in November 2001. The University of Virginia declared and reported in January 2016 about its Gallows Hill Project team had noted the execution site in Salem, where the nineteen witches had been hanged. The city owns the site and is planning a memorial to the victims.

Salem Village, which is known nowadays as Danvers, Massachusetts was known for its fractious population, who had many private conflicts, and for conflicts between the Village and Salem Town also known as Salem. Clash and disagreement about property lines, grazing rights, and church privileges were rife, and neighbours considered the population as quarrelsome.
