Brief History of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II

Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an aircraft that has asingle seat, single engine, and all weather stealth multirole fighters, which are now undergoing final development and testing by the United States. This aircraft is a member of the fifth generation combat aircraft which is designed to execute and perform ground attack, aerial reconnaissance, and air defense missions. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II has three primary models: the F-35A conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant and lastly, the F-35C carrier-based Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) variant. The first squadron was affirmed that it was completely ready for distribution and deployment after the long time and intensive testing by the United States last July 31, 2015.

Lockheed Martin slightly enlarged the design of X-35 into the F-35. He based it on the wind tunnel testing. To make more room for avionics, the forward fuselage was in 5 inches or 130 mm. appropriately, the horizontal stabilators were moved up to 2 inches or 51 mm rearward enable to retain balance and in control. Along the center line, the top surface of the fuselage was raised by 1 inch or 25 mm. sometime in November 2003, they started to manufacture the parts for the first F-35 prototype airframe. Due to the fact that the X-35 doesn’t have weapons bays, their addition in the F-35 would probably cause changes in the design and eventually will lead to later weight problems.

The F-35 was the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program winning design. It was design and constructed by an aerospace industry team which is led by Lockheed Martin. Last December 15, 2006, the F-35 took its first flight. The F-35 variants are purposely built to implement and provide thebulk of the manned tactical airpower of the United States Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps over the coming years. Production and more deliveries of the F-35 for the U.S. military are anticipated and scheduled to be completed in 2037.

The development of F-35 JSF is funded by the United States. Other countries which are close to U.S. allies are part of the development program. These countries include United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, and Turkey. Other several additional countries have placed their orders, and some are considering on ordering the F-35.

This program is considered to be the most expensive military weapons system in the history and at the same time, the program was the object of much criticism from those inside and outside government, in the United States and their allied countries.
