An independent city and inland port in the United States of Missouri, St. Louis, was developed along with the western bank of the Mississippi River, this forms Missouri’s border with Illinois. As of 2015, its estimated population is 315,685, because of this, the city was recognised as the 60th-most crowded and populated US city and the second largest city in Missouri after Kansas City.
The metropolitan area of St. Louis consists of the city as well as neighbouring areas in Missouri and Illinois with a predicted population of 2,916,447; it is considered as the largest city in Missouri and the nineteenth largest city in the United States.
In 1764, St. Louis was founded by fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and the city was named after Louis IX of France. The area was mostly prairie and open forest. Native Americans maintained this environment, good for hunting, by burning underbrush before the city was founded. Trees are mainly oak, maple, and hickory, the same as the forests of the neighbouring Ozarks typical under story trees include eastern redbud, service berry, and flowering dogwood. Riparian areas are forested with primarily American sycamore.
