Since 1978, the Ironman World Championship has been held each year in Hawaii with an added race in the year 1982. The World Triathlon Corporation is responsible in organizing the Ironman World Championship. It is the anniversary completion of a sequence of Ironman triathlon qualification races, which is held all over the world.
From 1978 to 1980, the race was held on the island of Oahu. There were three events held on the island. They are: The Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 mi/3.86 km), The Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 mi/185.07 km, which was basically and formerly a two-day event) and The Honolulu Marathon. The bike stage was diminished and shortened by 3 miles to tie it to the beginning of the marathon course.
In 1981, the race was lifted to the less sophisticated Big Island, with the same distance with 2.4 miles (3.86 km) open water swim in Kailua-Kona Bay, 112 miles (180.25 km) bike ride forwarding the Hawaiian lava desert to Hāwī and back, and a marathon (26 miles 385 yards, 42.195 km) run forward to the coast of the Big Island from Keauhou to Keahole Point and back to Kailua-Kona, finishing on Aliʻi Drive.
Starting 1982, the race has been held in the fall season every year before the event was held in the spring season, giving two races in 1982. Last October 10, 2015, was the most recent Ironman World Championship. Enabling and qualifying for the World Championship is accomplished by placing in one of the other Ironman races and some Ironman 70.3 races.
The present Ironman Hawaii course record was set in 2011 by Craig Alexander (Australia), who is holding the record of his winning time with 8 hrs 3 mins 56 sec. The women’s course record is 8 hrs 52 mins 14 sec, which was set in 2013 by MirindaCarfrae (Australia). Sometime in 2014, she also set the women’s run course record with 2 hrs 50 mins 26 sec.
Participants with disabilities still battle and fight in the event in the physically challenged category. This was established in 1997, and is enforced and mandatory to meet the same cutoff times as with the able-bodied competitors. John Maclean, an Australian was the first physically challenged athlete to complete the entire event.
Until 2015, individuals could still participate thelottery for the opportunity to participate and join in the Ironman World Championships. The lottery access and opening fee was $50 and allow the opportunity to win one of 100 berths in the championship race. The chosen winners then had to pay the normal entry fee.
