The torch flame was lit in Greece, as part of the tradition, last April 21, 2016, and the torch was handed to the Brazilian Olympic organisers on April 27.
The opening ceremony is set to take place on August 5, 2016 in the world famous Maracanã Stadium. More than 10,500 athletes representing the 206 National Olympic Committees will be competing in 42 Olympic sports. Tourists are expected to flock the country to witness the gruelling sports competition and to enjoy the beautiful spots in Brazil as well.
It wasn’t easy for the Brazilian Olympic organisers to get things ready. Aside from building new structures and refurbishing old sports venues, they are faced with other problems concerning the safety and security of the athletes and tourist watchers due to political volatility, heavy pollution, high crime rates and the Zika outbreak. Due to these concerns, it could be difficult for the host country to attract visitors.
However, local specialists stated that the high crime rates should not scare the tourists because foreign tourists are statistically safe, and they will be deploying high numbers of police and military to protect the tourists. Moreover, Rio de Janeiro’s health secretary assured travellers that Zika cases had dropped significantly as the Olympics is set to open in a couple of weeks. Zika virus is spread through a mosquito bite which can cause birth defects in babies born from infected mothers.
Perhaps, one of the most appalling concerns especially for the athletes is the murky waters of Guanabara Bay heavily polluted with chemical and hospital wastes, garbage and human excrement’s. Some of the athletes who joined the pre-Olympics trials who dipped or swallowed water from the Bay reported that they became ill from skin problems, gastrointestinal infections, and respiratory problems. However, the organisers gave an assurance that 80 per cent of the sewage system flowing to Guanabara Bay will be treated.
Nevertheless, with all these problems, Rio Olympics 2016 is pushing through as planned.
