A Brief History of the Henderson Executive Airport

Henderson Executive Airport is based on the central business of Las Vegas, in Clark County, Nevada, United States, and covers an area of 760 acres and at an elevation of 2,492 feet above mean sea level. The Henderson Executive Airport is a public airport owned by Clark County, and it was managed by the Clark County Department Aviation. It is classified as a reliever airport according to the FAA’s National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for the year 2009 to 2013. It was originally named as Sky Harbor Airport. However, it was changed in 1996 when it was acquired by Clark County to be used as a reliever airport for McCarran International Airport.

For the one-year period ending on December 31, 2008, the aircraft operation of the airport reached almost 72,000.

In the year 1969, Alby Alper created a new general aviation airport that was based in Las Vegas Valley. The airport was built to serve general and corporate flyers and at the same time, Grand Canyon sightseeing airlines. Throughout the year 1970’s-1980’s, the airport was active.

In 1996 when the Clark County Department Aviation acquired the airport, there were lots of improvement, development, and progress. Through this, the Department of Aviation aspires to boost the capacity of the nation’s fifth busiest airport by captivating corporate flyers to the new, first-class facility.

Many of the major constructions and projects were completed. This includes the construction of two parallel runways, which is considered to be the longest runway being 6,500 feet. The substantial utility infrastructure was also finished; a new maintenance building and 15 acres of aircraft parking ramp with three shade hangars are also part of the improvements.

In the year 1940’s, the original control tower was built and was reclaimed from Nellis Air Force Base. In 2006, a new tower was completed, this was part of the build-up and part of the expansion of Henderson Executive Airport after the Clark County purchased it.

As the Las Vegas continues to prosper, Henderson Executive Airport is now based near the booming and developing a community of Henderson and is only miles away from the south end of the well-loved and famous Las Vegas Strip.

The Henderson Executive Airport offers complimentary shuttle to the Strip, free coffee, tea, water, ice and newspapers, pilot lounge with snooze rooms and showers, free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, ample parking, low ramp and low parking fees, restaurants open from Monday to Sunday, no arrivals slot necessary, line services from air-towing is also provided and a 24 hour 100LL Self-service Island.
