5 Tips for Booking Jet Charter Spring 2021

May 4, 2021

Jordan Brown

Private jet charters are more relevant than ever before.  As we start to lean into post-pandemic life, private aviation is predicted to have its biggest year ever.  One of the driving forces is the COVID-19 pandemic.  Existing customers who flew both commercial and private made the full swing to private.  For new customers, the saying “once you fly private, you never go back” couldn’t be more accurate.  While 2020 was a slow year, it did see the largest number of new charter clients in the last decade.

But what does this mean to you, the customer?  Good question.

Below we have outlined 5 tips for booking your private jet charter for Spring 2021.  From when to book to what to watch out for, Charter Flight Group has you covered.

If your travel dates are firm - Book Immediately

Before the pandemic, booking your charter 1 week before your departure was the sweet spot – 81% of booked flights were confirmed 7 days or sooner from the first scheduled departure.  That is no longer the case post COVID-19.  With the charter market acquiring new customers during the pandemic, and existing fliers are reemerging, the industry has never experienced this type of demand.  If you are looking for the best price and most reliable operators, we recommend booking your trip as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.

Get used to paying more

For starters, flying private is not cheap – It is a value.  Customers also had the luxury of not paying Federal Excise Taxes (FET) due to the CARES Act passed in March of 2020 as a result of COVID-19.

Additionally, operators saw a significant decrease in flights flown in 2020.  That means, they are looking to capitalize on the new influx of demand in 2021.  If you don’t book the plane, someone else will.

DON'T shop and find a reputable advisor

It is common for customers to request quotes across multiple websites, apps, brokers, and charter operators with the purpose of choosing the best rate.  Who doesn’t want the best price?  But the truth is, this can impact your rate in a negative way.  Air operators will see the same requests and know the flight is going to fly regardless.  This also limits your advisor’s ability to negotiate a better rate on your behalf.  The flip side of the coin is that the air operator could also consider your request spam and not put any effort into the pricing.

Having a reputable and reliable advisor to guide your search and booking process is invaluable.  Everyone has access to the same supply.  The only difference is the markup or booking fee.  Some brokers may charge 5% while others will add 20% commission for the same aircraft and same route.  But you get what you pay for.

AOG’s are going to happen more often

All experienced fliers know what AOG stands for – Aircraft on the ground.  Meaning, the aircraft you booked will not be able to fly because of maintenance issues.  Expect more of this moving forward. It is also a good reason to make sure you are booking with an experienced brokerage such as Charter Flight Group.  An unbiased 3rd party will be able to give you a better scope of the market and their sole focus is YOU, the customer.  Operators simply look at their bottom line and chances are, they won’t have an adequate solution.

Speak with your advisor if you plan on traveling internationally.

It comes to no surprise you will most likely need to be vaccinated if you travel internationally.  Some countries are already requiring it.  If they aren’t prepared to at least take a COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of departure.  Give us a call today if you would like to discuss where you can travel internationally.
